Deploy a few decoys, scatter deceptive credentials around the environment, wait for an attacker to touch one, and generate an alert.

Evaluating whether that deception will actually work across a large enterprise is considerably harder.

The bigger question is: Will an attacker encounter the deception, believe it, and generate enough evidence for the SOC to act?

Deception is no longer simply a honeypot at a larger scale. Modern deception can span endpoints, networks, identities, Active Directory, cloud infrastructure, OT environments, credentials, data, applications, and likely attack paths.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre[1] has been testing that operational reality. Its cyber deception initiative involved 121 organizations, 14 commercial providers, and 10 product trials across environments ranging from cloud to operational technology. The NCSC found genuine potential for detecting novel threats and enriching threat intelligence, but also emphasized that deception is not plug-and-play. Its effectiveness depends on context, configuration, maintenance, and a clear strategy.

For security leaders conducting a deception technology comparison, that is an important distinction. The decision should not come down to the number of decoys in a licensing tier or the longest feature list. It should come down to whether the platform can make deception believable, put it where attackers are likely to encounter it, keep it current, and turn an interaction into something the SOC can investigate.

Here are 12 capabilities worth testing.

1. A fake SQL server that behaves nothing like the production SQL servers around it is not much of a trap.

MITRE’s adversary-engagement[2] guidance points to the same problem. Traditional honeypots can be unrealistic, easily signatured, and overly generic. MITRE instead advocates engagement environments tailored to their surroundings and instrumented around the defender’s objective.

Ask the vendor to demonstrate what happens when the decoy is interrogated more deeply.

A mature deception solution should support the appropriate mix of emulated and higher-interaction systems. When integrated with Fidelis Elevate, deception evidence can also be correlated with network, endpoint, sandbox, identity, and threat context.

Is agentless deception better than agent-based deception?

Not automatically.

Agentless deception can be attractive where organizations want to limit additional endpoint software or where endpoints cannot support an agent. Agent deception or locally delivered artifacts can provide different capabilities depending on the architecture.

The better evaluation is to determine exactly which components need to be deployed, what privileges and resources they require, how they are updated, and how much operational work they create.

Fidelis, for example, supports passive discovery approaches that do not require endpoint modification for that discovery process, while its OT deception can use lightweight virtual images and containerized services deployed off-path. The exact architecture should still be validated against the intended use case.

How should organizations conduct a deception technology comparison?

Use the same attack scenario and success criteria for every vendor.Test whether the attacker encounters the deception,Whether the deception remains believable under inspection,What context the SOC receives after an interaction,How much effort is required to deploy and maintain the environment.

Citations:

         ^UK National Cyber Security Centre^MITRE’s adversary-engagement guidance^MITRE ATT&CK documents^Verizon’s 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report

The post What to Look for in a Cyber Deception Solution: 12 Capabilities That Matter appeared first on Fidelis Security.

Key Takeaways Decoys should look and behave like the environment around them, not just appear convincing on a dashboard.
