Since then, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15389588.2025.2499887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">massive peer-reviewed study<\/a> analyzed Waymo\u2019s performance over 56 million rider-only miles (i.e., where no humans were behind the wheel), and the results are pretty wild:<\/p>\n<p>85% fewer suspected serious injuries compared to human drivers.<\/p>\n<p>96% reduction in intersection crashes (where 27% of fatal crashes happen).<\/p>\n<p>92% fewer pedestrian crashes.<\/p>\n<p>82% fewer cyclist and motorcycle crashes.<\/p>\n<p>For context, Waymo went from 10,000 weekly rides in May 2023 to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/24\/waymo-reports-250000-paid-robotaxi-rides-per-week-in-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">250,000 in April 2025<\/a>. That\u2019s ~25x growth in two years. If this rate continues, they could more than likely hit 1M weekly rides by early 2026.<\/p>\n<h2>The competition is on and popping<\/h2>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s Zoox finally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/10\/amazons-zoox-jumps-into-us-robotaxi-race-with-las-vegas-launch-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched in Vegas<\/a> with its toaster-on-wheels design\u00a0\u2014\u00a0there is no steering wheel, and the seats face each other. Chinese players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-20\/china-s-pony-ai-weride-take-robotaxi-rivalry-to-singapore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WeRide and Pony AI\u00a0<\/a>are partnering with Singapore\u2019s Grab for 2026 launches of their own.<\/p>\n<p>And Tesla? Tesla is still very much in game. As far as its fully autonomous robotaxi service, called \u201crobotaxi,\u201d it launched in June out in Austin though\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eweek.com\/news\/elon-musk-tesla-robotaxis-launch-austin\/\">not without controversy<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/money\/business\/tech\/2025\/09\/19\/tesla-cleared-launch-robot-taxis-self-driving-cars-arizona\/85580603007\/?gca-cat=p&amp;gnt-cfr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will soon launch in Phoenix<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<h2>Where\u2019s all this going?<\/h2>\n<p>Anyone (including you) owning and operating your own robo-fleet. Elon Musk made that a big part of his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/6v6dbxPlsXs?si=gfTdUdO27vl_9alX&amp;t=656&amp;utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=waymo-just-keeps-on-winning&amp;_bhlid=7b51f7c017759e30b026aa7438d8b54fda98de62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0launch event for the robotaxi<\/a>, and during Alphabet\u2019s Q1 earnings earlier this year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai hinted at \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/656267\/waymo-self-driving-car-personal-long-term-business-earnings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">future optionality around personal ownership.<\/a>\u201d Translation: You might eventually be able to buy your own Waymo that earns money while you sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>Why this matters<\/h2>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/emollick_it-seems-like-there-is-not-enough-of-a-policy-activity-7365016825975242752-7bLm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethan Mollick says<\/a>, with 40,000 killed and 2.4 million injured in U.S. accidents annually, an 85% reduction in serious injuries should be front-page news. Bigger cities are starting to catch on:<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/08\/22\/waymo-approved-to-start-autonomous-vehicle-testing-in-new-york-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0NYC just approved Waymo testing<\/a>, and Singapore\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/iansayson\/2025\/09\/21\/grab-weride-to-start-singapore-driverless-shuttle-service-in-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fast-tracking approvals<\/a>. Waymo also just announced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/waymo.com\/blog\/2025\/09\/waymo-is-coming-to-nashville-in-partnership-with-lyft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new launch in Nashville<\/a> in partnership with Lyft.<\/p>\n<h2>The policy vacuum is a real issue<\/h2>\n<p>As Mollick noted, there\u2019s not enough policy response to self-driving cars existing.
